I bought this Shimpaku from Buddhamonk the other day. (Thanks again.) As a beginner, I am very weary about styling it, but I don't want it to get out of control either. I have wired a few branches to horizontal but I just wanted to see if anyone has some input on what direction to take this tree in.

"Front" as labeled on the pictures is just the most open area of the tree and I could choose a different front.

My first thought is to grow out the apex.

It is a nice tree, but one that can be screwed up easily. All the foliage needs to be pulled in much closer to the trunk. I'm not at all sure you have chosen the right front, either. But choosing the front from a 2-D picture is NOT a good idea.

I'd suggest you find someone at your local club to be a mentor and help you with it. Lots of bonsai people in your area. Find them.

Thank you very much for your advice. I have joined the Bonsai Society of Portland and I'm sure I will be able to get pointed in the right direction.
