First Elm, Falling Leaves and Yellowing Moss

Key words..."so far". If you're anything like most of us, that'll change in a hurry. Get a bigger light!

Upgrade

Btw, this thread inspired me to upgrade to a 3*2' t5 fixture. Quick question, but the bulbs it came w say t5 HO. Are they interchangeable with the other t5 bulbs as long as they fit.? Are all t5 bulbs HO?

Let me know if you want my old fixture. I am still using the stand though.

Edit: yey, 100 posts makes me a pre-bonsai. Hope I'm not annoying too many with my rookie material.

Hey MrFancyPlants, sorry if I did not respond earlier. I created myself a setup that was easier to put up than a T5 fixture, see pictures below.

I bought two $12 lamp fixtures, of a 8.5" diameter which increases the light diffusion. And I installed one 300w equivalent CFL bulb of 4,200 lumens in each fixture.

The cost per fixture/bulb combo is about $30, and produces 3 times more lumens than a $60 T5 fixture.

A few weeks after my Elm arrived, it lost 80% of its leaves. A lot of mites crashed the tree and were killing it. I sprayed the tree with Pyrethrin and after putting the new lights on, I started to see new shoots after a couple of days!

Hey, nice work. It looks like the light will be sufficient. How many actual watts are the cfl's rated at? Are you going to have any outdoor space available during the summer, or is going to be all indoors? Let me know if you need some help or supplies when it comes to repotting. The only thing I am missing for this season is some orchid sphagnum.

I NEED HELP! I need to repot both the Ficus and Seybrook. The Ficus is in a plastic training pot and the Seybrook came in the pot that has not drain hole.

The CFLs are rated at 68w (click here for a description).

I am not planning to put the trees outside in the summer. I trust my balcony (pretty small and exposed to winds).

This is the fixture I ended up buying. I am pretty happy with the upgrade. It even came with bulbs which I was not expecting. My wife got me the original t5 as a present and she can get a little defensive if she even thinks I dislike her gifts, but she said "I see why you wanted to upgrade, that is bright." I also finally got the cpu coolers for my second LED buildout. I'll post as soon as I get that put together, but it might be a couple weeks yet.

Edit: Don't buy from that company on eBay. I paid shipping after the first fixture proved defective and they said the 4bulb product was more reliable, but it showed up and only two bulbs worked from the get go. I can't imagine they are profiting from my waste of time and money since they are paying shipping on their end too. Very frustrating. At least my home wired LEDs are holding strong.

What an understanding wife! Thanks for the P.M.

First thing to learn about Bonsai, is not to panic...
You will end up with more lost trees as a result
of making rash and impromtu decisions...

The ficus will be fine in a plastic training pot.
And as far as the Seybrook, is it in a plastic
container as well ??? If so, take an old pair
of scissors and punch a couple of holes in the
bottom of the pot.

on second thought... Panic !!!
I just saw your other post regarding the Seybrook.
:o

Nah, I'll just break that pot and transfer the entire thing to a new pot...preferably a larger one...and with a hole. ;)

:D

I know you were. As one can see, I am new to bonsais, and already killed one! I think I killed my schefflera as well. Live and learn.
Everyone here was new to Bonsai at one time...
Not to mention killing off their fair share of trees...
