Finally an affordable wire caddy

I'll "borrow" the design and might even improve on it. Looks fairly easy to make.

Thanks!

I ordered one. I'll let you know how it works.

Sorry but that kind of sucks. he went through all the trouble to design and put it together he deserves to reap the benefits. I guess there's no law against it if it's not copyrighted but I'd be p/o'ed if I came up with something like that and someone just copied it.

hmmm...I guess China and Japan would still be third world countries if copying was forbotton?

Dario just said what 17 other people on here were thinking. It's no big deal. Happens all the time.

Great Idea... I'm gonna "borrow" the design too.

'cept I'm thinking steel pipe and connectors so I can move it without it falling apart. :p

Some of us have more time than money; some more money than time. This guy is selling to those of us that don't have the ability to build one for ourselves. Every design is up for grabs if it's public. If Dario reproduces these and puts them on ebay at $40, now I think there's a case for the seller being wronged.

Save your plans if you make one Poink!

So you haven't done anything you got "inspired" by other people's work? Tell me honestly then we can talk. Hint, making bonsai for example. Was that your own original idea?

What makes me getting a few pieces of pipe (raw materials), piecing it together any different?

Ed,

That looks great. Only problem is it is geared for wires in spools. Ours in bonsai don't have one so you need to make an adapter to make it work better. (note the center of the spool holder is probably only 5" high) and my wire rolls are bigger than that. JMHO

Maybe I should make the "adapter spools" and market it with this!!! :o ;) LOL

I hope we never have to have so much wire it requires a rack...

You would think right? I used to feel the same way but now, it really is frustrating when your spools get tangled or cannot get the right size right away (I have 8 different sizes now) and they are all aluminum. Imagine if I add copper.

Being inspired by other peoples work is not the same as ripping off their idea.
I've been inspired by lots of different things but I've never taken someone's idea for a marketable item and made it for myself. I have a wire caddy that I've had for 15 years that is 100% more efficent then this one that easily could be copied but I won't do it . But thats me, if you're comfortable with doing it then knock yourself out.
How would you feel if you invented a tool or something that you were marketing and someone else stole your design. I know it happens all the time- look at fishing tackle- it gets copied all the time but that doesn't make it right. Ask someone whose spend the time and trouble to invent something only to have someone rip off the idea how they feel about it.

Bob,

To me ideas are free, I love it to flow as such. That is the main reason we have this forum (I believe).

I do not believe in reinventing the wheel...unless it is to satisfy my curiosity. :D ;)

I did not even say I will copy that thing (maybe I cannot even if I try because I do not have the plans). I did say I will BORROW the IDEA/design and IMPROVE on it. I am into innovation. Now if you have problems with that, we can agree to disagree.

And as mentioned...I have more time than money. I will be honest, some similar things cost me more to make than if I bought it to begin with. But I like the satisfaction of making my own.

I like this one much better, but it is nearly twice the money.

Regarding the one on ebay made of PVC: Who's to say this person thought of the design? He may have seen something similar and made one of his own, with modifications perhaps. Who knows. It is certainly enterprising of him to go into production and sell them, but imitation happens every day. Certainly there are subtle differences between a Ford Model T and a Stanley Steamer. My suspicion is that one was made before the other, and the latter took some ideas from the former.
Also this seller is not only selling some PVC. He is cutting and fitting and finishing and assembling, and charging for the labor as well as the materials. All tasks that some may not have the desire or ability to accomplish on their own. And just because someone sees it and decides to try to make one of their own, it does not necessarily follow that it will be as good or functional as the one copied. Ask Mr. Stanley how that worked out for him.

That does look nice, but my kilo spools would not fit.

Thats odd, I have used one of these for years. The rolls of wire I buy have no spolls either, they have a large center and hang down when lifted, they are generally in five inch coils though. When set down the wire just lowers itself to the base, like shelf or bench you set it on. When you need some just grab the end and pull off as much as you need, it just rolls around as you pull it off, then cut it to the length desired.

Perhaps you are overthinking this a tad. LOL

Thats what a patent is for.
