Field Grown Yatsubusa Elms

Some virts

I'm bored stiff this time of year with little to do. This morn I had some time to sketch in PS. Do you guys think any of these designs have any future? The first one is the crown and pot of an elm I found online. Where I saw it, it didn't have any attribution. It's basically just a trunk swap for a base line and idea. The next two, are similar barring a tertiary trunk being grown out at the base of the tree. Something a bit different perhaps. Any thoughts?

Thank you for your time.

#2 looks great to me. That's what I would envision.

Sorry to bump this again, I'm reading more and more about this species and receiving (as always) conflicting information. Am I to do any branch reduction this early? This little guy came with a bunch of roots. The tree is super vigorous.

Usually I would be happy to let it go all season but I don't want to devote too much energy to branches in the wrong areas. Thoughts?

Thank you as always.

With elms like this, I like to rub out what I know I can't use as early as I can...

I think this is a good idea unless your tree is really weak. Make sure you get rid of all the pitchforks (3 branches coming from one point - reduce to two) because you will get some ugly bumps resulting from this. Also branches you don't really need just slow down the ones you do need - get rid of them. I just thinned a yatsubusa this morning and this is exactly what I did.

Go time this weekend. Did a little thinning over the past week and might do some more before first wiring and styling. The bottom branches will be allowed to grow for the entirety of the coming year to thicken.

Sadly the other suffered through the season so it will need some more time until it gets any work done. Black Spot will be managed better this year. Might even break down and give it a giant chop.

I'll post an update soon.

I think the lil guy is very nice. For what it's worth, the Yatsabusa I got from Martha Meehan have VERY small leaves compared to these. These look more the size of Chinese, but the bark is different. I think your suggestion of cork bark may be a good liklihood. Nice trees!
