We have a few landscape Encore azaleas, and a couple of years ago I thought I'd try one as a bonsai. After all, if I can get blooms two or three times a year, what's to lose? I just didn't know if they would be a suitable plant to work with.

Turns out that after a year of total neglect and a very difficult winter, my little Debutante is putting on a show -- much better show than the older ones in front of the house.

It's really young, but the leaves are small (1" max), and if I take care of it this year, it will be a tighter, better-looking plant next year. If I continue getting this kind of display, I might try another. Gives me something to enjoy waiting for the satsukis to wake up, and I hope to see a similar floral display in the fall.
