Emergency repot!

Unless you are willing to listen to people who have done this for a bit.
I do not consider bonsai to be an experiment.
I feel very fortunate that I chose this tree to begin with, it showed me just how little I know about things dispite all of the studying I have been doing I know now I have a very long journey ahead of me to make sure I master this art form.

that will be a long and painful journey if you don’t recognise good advice

confirming what @leatherback said, that pot is way too big

It's the smallest pot I currently have 😅 aside from the vase which has proven to be a very poor choice...

I can't currently afford to purchase a pot should I try and scrap one together from say a coffee can?

Or just wait until spring hits and put it outside in the ground?

If your trying to start bonsai from seed. Soon if not now will be a great time to wander around trails or your yard and collect last year seedlings before they wake up. They’ll be tree’s that grow in your climate so they will be acclimated. Also you’ll learn from what you collect.

Good advice👆

Unfortunately here in Utah we don't have any bonsai nurseries (there are around 3 shops with a tree or two but no true nurseries)

Because of this I did purchase this 1 year old Sequoia at a good price (around 20)...

Although I know several other trees would be quite easier the Sequoia caught my attention for its massive growth potential! In truth I should probably have planted it in the ground for a year before doing anything with it but i got it in the middle of winter..

Nonetheless I find so far the tree has been a great teacher with it's massive growth it heals quite well from the minor pruning I've done, It only recently started having issues (which I hopefully resolved here)

I've been studying the concepts and ideas behind bonsai always hungry for more..

I do currently have some cherry cuttings in the works if my poor tree dies, and I'll probably purchase another Sequoia and try Again with better technique learning from my mistakes... I'm stubborn and I'll keep trying for this!... If I do have to restart I may start it over a rock too given how long the roots are on the companies trees 🤔 future mes problem tho
Do you have any regular landscape nurseries near you? You can often find juniper at such places with good movement.

Otherwise, I know you can get young shimpaku online that you can wire into shape and grow out

I do but all their trees are outside my price range

Anything that can tolerate UV and has drainage holes (drill them) can serve as a pot although I would avoid metal. Simple plastic food containers could be acceptable as an intermediate solution but they will deteriorate within 1 or 2 years due to uv.

I second this. You don't really have to spend any money, if you really feel like you need to repot, having the right size container is the key. Look around the house. Tupperware containers can work, yougurt/cottage cheese containers etc. Drill some holes in the bottom, if you don't have a drill, take a sharp knife and make some holes in them.
