I have recently bought an elm, I did some light pruning 6 weeks ago, while it has replaced some leaves I feel overall growth for this time of year is sluggish at best. (It came from Florida the dealer said and it came full of dark green foliage so I think it has not defoliated for the winter.) Both new and old leaves were very dull and a bit on the limp side, 3 days ago I took it out of the pot (plastic 5"x5" potted in pine bark) to look at the roots, roots looked good, not at all pot bound and had some new growth. There was a hollow at the bottom from erosion and quite a few silverfish (I think) living in there, so I decided to repot it. I cut a small amount of root to reduce the height of the root ball, put in gravel and a mix of pine bark and sandy compost, watered and felt good about it. The very next day many leaves had yellowed and dropped to the touch, I've seen this before, overwatering I'd say. It's been dropping leaves ever since, I brought it inside (into the AC air) to dry it out because it's been raining and humid for weeks. This morning the soil is drying out well but there is another batch of yellow leaves, the came off leaving everything left green but two hours later another batch of leaves are yellow and drop when touched. I never seen anything this severe there won't be anything left soon. I have enclosed a picture, any advice?
