Dwarf Jade Help

Did not know this. Cool!

I aim for October before I'll bring trops indoors. Actually made it to October 1st a couple years ago. And yes, temps touch into the 30's.

@Leo in N E Illinois floats the idea of a bit of a dormancy after a bit of exposure to cooler temps. I think he might be on to something. Or at least the plant suffers no ill-affects. A couple of months of a break from 3-4 waterings a day on more than a few trees ain't so bad!!:D:D:D:D:D

...........if it wasn't @Leo in N E Illinois , I apologize for the confusion!! And as I usually say, don't do what I do!!!;):D:D:D:D:D:D:D:D

It’s incredibly windy here currently. Should I wait to take my bonsai outside? And should I protect my juniper that is outside?

Maybe Grimmy? He told me he let his get a good chill before bringing them in. Your BRT's don't mind temps in the 30's? I bring mine in when it get's below 50, but I'm a chicken-shit.

I definitely water my p.afra more often during the “growing season.” I let mine “rest” a bit in the winter with much less water. Perhaps I should be giving them more!

My cacti and other succulents seem to benefit from a winter rest period like this (except for the winter growing species like aeonium), but hell its not like I have any spectacular specimens to show off so maybe (probably) I’m doing it all wrong!

nah...it was Leo.....I just like to put that caveat in there to save some grief if it came down to it.:D:D:D:D:D:D:D:D

BRT should be fine if daytime highs get to 50's, I just tune in and observe if the "sulk" lasts a little too long into the day....:eek::D:D:D:D:D

My BRT was not at all happy with my leaving it out in the frost... but it survived. Next year if it gets this cold again I will definitely scoop it inside on the cold (frost) days. It dropped all its leaves... but right now it looks like a mop with new growth everywhere.

I just went into my garden and grabbed these two to show you what I'm talking about. They are planted in 100% pumice in large pond baskets and sit out in full sun all summer long. I just pruned them in December and they are already leggy and need to be cleaned up again.

@Bonsai Nut
I’m growing some smaller portulacaria afra myself. Did yours grow to this trunk girth while in pond baskets? Or were they planted in larger pots or in the ground to get that trunk size first before you put them in pond baskets?

Thanks!

These are supposedly cork bark cultivars that I got from Frank Yee. I say "supposedly" because they aren't corking up very much. I think they cost me $20 each. Frank said they start corking at about six years of age, so I would have thought I would see something by now. They grow like weeds for me and don't seem to need an extensive root structure to grow large. They have been in those pond baskets for two or three years now and have gotten quite fat. I have to trim them several times a year to maintain a tree shape. They bud back everywhere, whenever they feel like it :) If you look closely in the photo, the one on the left I just noticed has a small bud in the center of the trunk right at the soil line. That's going away soon!

These are nothing compared to some of my jade plants, several of which have been growing in my landscaping for over 20 years! I never realized how big these plants can get. All they need is sun and fertilizer and occasional water. My jade plants only get water when I think about it and drag a hose out to them... which can truly mean months between watering.

Thanks everyone, this is a very helpful discussion. Based on what I read here (and what I see on my defoliated cuttings after a few days outside in dappled sun), my problem was light. During the winter they are in a southwest facing window. But this winter in Dallas was unusually dark--much higher percentage of cloudy days than sunny ones. And my defoliation problems began after the clouds came to stay.

Please show some photos of large Jade. I have seen some in nurseries that were ~7 or 8 feet which surprised me.

I found a nursery in California that sells the cork bark cultivar. $10 for the cutting, $14 for shipping....$50 for invasive species inspection because Idaho. Can't quite stomach $75 for a ten inch cutting afra cutting lol.

My dwarf jade recently started dropping its leaves. Nothing has changed as far as watering or environment. It is still producing nice new shoots on most of its branches. However some of them instead of producing new shoots are dropping the leaves. I am fairly new to bonsai and only have three so I don’t know if this is normal or not.
Has it recovered?
