While we are on the subject of DIY and bonsai on the cheap, besides the crock lid, what at are some other DIY solutions for larger pots? I have seen some using concrete over sand molds. Any other ideas for not paying big bucks for large pots, and still achieving the look?

Just a note on plastic training / raw material pots (and tubs, storage boxes etc), you can easily drill/enlarge holes without them cracking by using a step/cone drill.

I use a lot of small plastic containers for seed starting and plant development. I have used a heated rod to melt through holes in plastic that might have a tendancy to crack. I can do about half a dozen at a time. Do it outside to avoid the burning plastic smell.

I did some research into fiberglass like used to make custom subwoofer panels and such in the vehicle.

Seems easy enough, strong, waterproof.

I didn't feel like reading all the posts, but :

When I drill holes in a pot, which I don't do very often these days, I put it on a layer of sand that absorbs the vibrations. Before doing that, most of the time, the pot broke. On a bed of sand, they dont.
