I live in the North Ga area zone 7b and found some nice older 3 gallon nursery stock....Is it too late in the season to do a drastic cutback and repotting .....?

You can cut it back to primary branches and expect growth to pop, but flowering may be spotty next year.

It is definitely too late to do root-work, however.

I have done drastic cutback and root pruning on large Chinzan nursery stock without any problems through the end of July. Of course I always protect the plant until buds began to pop and then just morning sun after that... your mileage may vary but with good after care it shouldn't be a problem. If waiting is an option, your best results would come from work done in the Spring.

Check out Johns YouTube channel to see those azalea that he cut back to stumps. They're the whole reason I became interested in azaleas.

Me too....I have watched everything on drastic cutback from his youtube channel.....I even found the one where he goes thru the first cutback....The Chinzan and Gumpo azalea are harder to find....But I found some nice ones of both varieties today....Price is pretty good as well...$12.99

I think for me it will be best to cut the branches back and leave the root work till spring.

John...Thank you for all the videos.
