Double trunk Hawthorn

I'm curious why you didn't use a colander. While the branch structure is far from set, what is there is very usable. Wire in some movement, cut back....and so forth. Wouldn't think many more "main" branches would be necessary. Wouldn't using a colander help to slow rampant overgrowth as the roots are getting "pruned" as they pass thru the sidewalls. Which should then. in turn, cause your branches to create secondary and tertiary branching? Something like that? Not and expert, just asking some queztons!!:D:D:D:D:D:D

I'm glad Varmint Cong didn't "re-educate" this one!!!!!:(:mad::mad::mad:;):D:D:D:D:D
It was in the colander for 2 years right after collection.
At about a year and a half it started to slow down. It had filled the colander full with roots. It was so dense with roots that it would hardly take water. And it would suck the colander dry in 6 hours and start getting droopy. It was colander bound.
I could have cut the roots back and stuck it back in but it would just been in the same predicament again but even sooner.
So I put it into this pot. It's wider than the colander but shallower. I thought about putting it into the ground this year because I want rampant unchecked growth to thicken the branches faster. I'll be wiring them for movement but not cut them back this year.

Ahhh yes...lost the one from Will as well. I recall that. So no loss to varmints this winter? What did you do this winter that changed it up a bit? Just curious.
No trees died this winter.
I built a steel enclosure all te way around the area. It's buried 10" deep so they can't tunnel under too.
It worked wonderfully!

Looking good, i would be tempted to wire or to cut back so some movement and ramification is induced.

Hey, that's coming along nicely! Good job! Glad it survived "the plague".

Had a couple V.C. put in an appearance last winter. In one day they did this. I killed them as soon as I found it. It's the only tree they got to before I got to them. Trapped them a male and pregnant female. Fed their carcasses to Rupert. Maybe he'll get a taste for rodent.
The tree will regrow the branches but it took quite a setback.20180519_121840.jpg20180519_121817.jpg
