Dormant spray - what do you use (if anything)?

Does anyone else use Jin Seal?

Jin seal is just lime sulfur, so you can follow the dilution rates on the Hi-Yield label I posted in my resource for dormant application IF AND ONLY IF you KNOW the concentration is 28%. But that’s the problem. The concentration is rarely put on the label, you have no idea what the provenance is and will likely never know. It might be just pet dip put into small bottles and re-labeled. It might be diluted 50% before rebottling. It might be made in someone’s back yard and bottled up privately. Since it’s just made for treating deadwood, it’s never inspected and you won’t find and MSDS data sheet for it. For deadwood it’s fine, but for anything else, I’d be very cautious.

Besides all that, it would be a more expensive than it needs to be. A 4 oz bottle of Jin seal on Dallas Bonsai is $15. Assuming it’s 28% (the label doesn’t say, of course), it’s not even enough for one gallon! You can get a way better price on Amazon or online at one of the links I posted in the resource.

I have good results using this product. It is clearly labeled 97.8% sulfurated lime. Probably the same thing as your Davis brand product - I believe it is manufactured by Dechra.

Quick question, when spraying dormant spray for example lime sulfur… how many times should you apply this in the winter? Every month( winter )

or at least once?

I have seem dormant oil used on in ground orchard trees. Not so much for bonsai. If anything I use neem for anything coming inside, or at least carefully inspect after I bring them in. Neem a few days prior to coming in. If you plan do not monitor your trees all winter id suggest spraying them all down with perhaps. Too risky otherwise in my eyes

Got it, saw marks post and it clear eveything out.

There are many types of oil, it's important to read the labels carefully. IIRC all oils will ruin the color of "blue" evergreens, use with caution! (it's just cosmetic, but I think the change is permanent until the foliage is replaced)

Does all oils include Neem oil? Maybe obvious but wanted to confirm.

I use neem oil on my pines and junipers prior to putting them into the cold frame for the winter

Quick question..

When is the optimum time to spray lime sulfur?

early winter, mid winter or before bud break?

thanks
Chris

Just at bud-break, at least 6 weeks after dormant oil, IIRC.

View attachment 223008Using this, would I use 1/3-1/4 the concentration as LS that is 28%?. i.e. If I used the 28% solution at 1 cup per gallon, would 1/3-1/4 cup per gallon be similar?

I found this quote online regarding that product: "I manufacture the lime sulfur solution. The information stated on the ingredients is only the solution as a whole and the inerts are the sediment or impurities. The calcium polysulfide (real part that works) in this concentration is the same as the 29% solution you purchase for plants. I hope this helps."

But technical things like this is very difficult for me to grasp.
