Dime size Tree

Let us know what you think about the book. I read a review of one of his books, maybe Mission of Transformation, that said the translation was really wacky.

I have both. Vision of My Soul is a softbound book, but the binding is nice. My favorite part is the beginning where he attempts to describe the aesthetics of bonsai in terms of line, form, texture, perspective - and how the classical rules and bonsai styles may be described by these artistic terms. The translation is good and the photos are good quality. The bulk of the book is split between a set of studies of bonsai that he styled along with notes describing his artistic vision for each and a set of styling studies for bonsai in transition.

Mission of Transformation is a longer, hard bound book. The binding is ok, but not particularly good quality. It's organized similarly to his other book, but he goes into much more detail in the artistic piece. It is a book with tremendous potential, but is marred by a poor translation and poor editing that's led to awkward sentence structure, abundant passive voice, misspellings, etc., etc., etc. picture quality is not as good as the other book.

That's my take, anyway.

I will indeed give my thoughts. Like Scott, I have both as well with the exception that both are hardcover and Vision of My Soul is a signed and numbered limited first edition. I'm about 1/3 the way through Vision and it is captivating. Unfortunately, I spend to much time at work and on the computer to read it quickly. I know someone that worked with Mr. Steven and am told he is every bit the artist we think he is. He lives in Indonesia.

The material in Vision thus far is more of an artistic journey than an instructional one which is what I was hoping for. Like many, I struggle with the artist ability to visualize the finished tree.
I'll post my review of each when I finish reading them.

Does anyone know of a source for the tiny-ish pots to grow these in. I have been looking and can't find any source other than a few examples on ebay, pricey too.

Thanks,

John

John, I have a few smaller Mame Pots but no Minis (well one, but I'm using it). What size are you looking for exactly?

how are you able to keep these watered well if you have a normal day job? This is pretty cool but I think they'd die between watering

I water everything at 6:30 A.M. before I go to work and for those that need it when I get home at 6:30 P.M. I water again. July and August are the worst for watering needs.

Soil mix is smaller around 2 mm, for crushed red brick [ porous], gravel [ silica based, non porous ] and compost with peat moss [ holds more moisture ].

Watering is before 7.00 am and is two passes with the watering can, and in the evening before 4.30 p.m one pass. Goes into the late evening with dry foliage.

Placement is full sun, and there is some wind.

Simple really, and they need no special treatment.Have small ones going onto 20+ years from cutting or seed.
Good Day
Anthony

My soil for the little ones is the fines sifted from Turface and the fines sifted from composted pine bark, about 30/70. I water in mid morning (automatic system) than check in the p.m. Usually there's no need to water.

I have a few and a I do not plan to use them. Just for fun, I'll auction them here as the lot of 8 shown in this photo, and donate everything less shipping and PayPal cost to Bonsai Nut. Be advised, these are not "high-end" pots, but they're in good condition. Most appear to be unused.

Here's the rules:
1. Bid by replying to this thread only
2. Increase the bids in $1.00 increments (no change). Starting bid will be $10.00.
3. Highest bidder at 10:00 PM CST, Wednesday, 1/21 wins.
4. I will "Reply with Quote" to the winning bidder and we can complete the transaction through PM.
5. I'll ship on Thursday AM, Priority.
6. US residents only this time, as shipping would likely negate any proceeds going to BNut.
7. PM me with any questions.
8. Have fun, and let's raise a little cash for BNut.

Big thumbs up to your donation to BN. I'll start off at $25

I have a bunch of mame pots, just looking for some of those tiny ones that you see on the net on the tip of someone's finger. Oh, and small cascade pots, like four inches tall or so.

Cost is less than $4 a pot. Surprised there are not more bids.
