Yes, that section of bark died. However, if Montezuma is similar to bald cypress the adjacent bark will roll over. You may want to keep some bare wood as a feature.Hey... so just noticed that one of my Montezuma Cypress had a large piece of bark flapping in the wind. Never seen or had this issue with any of my other trees. The Leader is still green... could this section be dead? Curious.... Thanks!

Thanks Zach... Could definitely be interesting! Curious to see how this progresses... would like to see some of the bark roll over.Montezuma is similar to bald cypress the adjacent bark will roll over. You may want to keep some bare wood as a feature.
GUILTY! Really went at it last season. Hoping this could be at some point aesthetically pleasing... then I can say I planed the whole thing. That can happen if you're a bit too aggressive
I've had this happen with BC's from time to time. The healing has been pretty strong, in some cases closing over in just a couple of years. Thanks Zach... Could definitely be interesting! Curious to see how this progresses... would like to see some of the bark roll over.
WOW! I tried looking up some pics but didn't find much. Thanks for the info Zach... hope MC and BC react similar in this scenario.in just a couple of years.
