I know this flys in the face of what we are all told is desirable, but does anybody have an idea how one may intentionally create severe inverse taper half way up a tree? I have an idea for a bit of an arty project for which this is an important factor. I want a skinny trunk then a large bulge ideally.

You could band it just below the area you want to swell.
find a whorl of branches or a point where at least three branches come from one spot. Band it there for a head start on the swelling
I did wonder about doing that. I guess I’d have to remove the band before it suffocates the tree, but in an ideal world I’d be creating something akin to an upside down bottle, albeit a fairly narrow one proportionally. Could I strap branches vertically up the main trunk perhaps to form some sort of graft as they grow? I’m thinking of using something like a trident or field maple for the stock.
