Cork elm for ya :)

Oh oh, some nasty reverse taper building up. They seem to have a patent on it. I wonder if something could be done about it.

Yeah, it is the weakness of this particular tree. The lower left branch I am growing out freely as a primary, and that will help. The other solution is to really develop the ramification, so the trunk doesn't look so out of place relative to the fine branches.
 
You've had good luck with layers recently, have you considered layering it right below the fork and taking two trees out of it?
