Can someone explain this or show me an image of compound direction in a tree. Thank you.

Do you mean a tree that is going in different directions? What comes to mind are some of the multitrunk trees I've seen. I'll see if I could find a picture if that's what you mean.

I am not certain what you refer too. I picture in my head something like and informal or double cascade rather then a formal  Is this a term you can quote how it was used?

I inquired on a tree I'm considering purchasing and this was a portion of his response. I'm just a bit unclear as to what he means.

"Tree has two tops. You can go
slant style or back over the top (compound direction). Bonsai in old
days was compound direction, since then has moved more classical to---
top ends the same direction as the bottom movement is. If bottom moves
to the right, then the top ends the same way. NOT bottom goes one way
and the top ends in the other direction or opposite"

I've not heard that term, but seems like he is saying that compound means the tree points to the left, while the base is to the right. Meaning the apex movement is to the left, but the base movement is right. At least that's how I'm reading it.

I think what he is saying is that "as is" you can develop a slant or a compound standard. Be interested in a good pic of it so maybe we can do some "chop virts" to show what the seller refers to and perhaps verify what they mean ;) Of course you can make a tree any way you want but "I think" the seller just sees those to options as easiest...

Thank you to both of you for your input. Lots of foliage and hard to see whats going on, but here's 2 pics.

Gotta say that after viewing the pics, I'm confused as to what he is talking about with this tree. I guess the trunk moves to the right in the first photo, so he is saying you would also have the apex moving in that direction. But maybe it's just the photos, looks more broom like than the classic triangle style to me.

Thumbless, I see what you mean, does seem to fit with what he said. Thanks for sharing the photo.

If that stump was 2 foot taller left to grow I can see the sellers "opinion" of the future. In fact that would probably take several years in the ground. Judy has the correct perspective on it "as is". Not a bad tree and "could be" regal but not in my lifetime as a slant or a compound. It could however be a VERY nice broom in 2 or 3 seasons if all goes well. Looks healthy and if it has decent roots it is worth looking into depending on price. Seems to me at this stage and the sellers "thoughts" it may be overpriced...

Thank you Grimmy for your thoughts on this.

No problem but at 60 I tend to try to put time in perspective while still loving the art of Bonsai - hell I do not even know the price or "exact" plant but I gave an honest answer based on general experience. Judy has a great "eye" as well and I enjoy doing business with her and seeing her step up a ton over a few years. All about time and nature.

Grimmy at almost 62, I totally hear ya. I agree, Judy has a great eye, and I bought one of her trees recently, and love it. I should have been a tad more clear on this tree. I purchased a tree from this individual making the comments about compound direction and unfortunately it suffered a late spring freeze prior to shipping to me. Once I got it the leaves started to go and I may have lost a few very small branches. The tree itself is alive and I'm sure will come back fine. Seller felt so bad about the whole thing, he decided to send another tree and the tree in this thread is the tree he is sending, so I'm not out any money on this. I just wasn't sure I understood his comments. I appreciate the input though and we shall see how it goes. Thanks again.
