Collected Sagebrush (Artemisia Tridentata)

I am in socal and these are all over our high deserts. Very cool…native species.
In that habitat, just out of interest, do you flush any sage grouse?

I have not. Quail and dove but no grouse.

Danny, can you describe your general care regimen for these? Assuming full sun and lots of water? Do you repot every year - how quickly do they fill the pot with roots? I recently acquired my first of this species 😁
TJ! I’ve only had the two in pots for one season, but the pots had quite a few roots. Not fully packed, but way more than I thought I’d have. They love water for sure and lots of sun. I have found that when the branches, especially the older branches are soaking wet, the bend and move much easier. I’ll keep updates on more I find!

Of the bunch collected, this one is by far the best. It’s so wild and funky.

When I collected it, the rootball fell away leaving only a handful of roots left. I thought for sure it wouldn’t make it. I took it home anyways.

I shoved it into this nursery can and packed in some pumice and larger rocks just to keep it propped up. To my surprise it has already begun growing and has clearly taken better hold in the pot.

all the more reason these should be cultivated as bonsai.

That one is hella cool

These are some of the best sage bonsai I have seen ANYWHERE Danny! Seriously epic trees!

Thanks TJ! They are so tough! But I do have some questions about about the deadwood live vein situation. What was the live stream from Mirai on sagebrush like?

I will have to go back and watch and see if that was addressed.

Gave this one a trim. Thinned out as much crotch growth as possible and cut back to two where possible. Very clumping growth style, but cleans up as much as any other Bonsai.

current planting angle.

may change it to here or so next year

the difficulty is the layering of the different sub trunks and how much I want to reveal them.

These are absolutely amazing, Danny! Why aren't more people using these as bonsai? They're fantastic. I wish I could have one but they probably wouldn't do well over here.

It actually might be ok in Petaluma, depending on how far inland.
I'm not certain about their dormancy requirements, and you may have to fight fungus from the extra humidity, but I don't imagine you're too far off the mark.
