I collected this live oak from a friend's yard in Lubbock about 2 years ago. It's been surviving in heavy organic soil in a very large pot. Today I transplanted it into my more porous raised flower bed over a large flat stone to work on the nebari. I had to remove a large, ugly, cantankerous, bulbous root. It was probably 2/3 of the root mass, so I'm really hoping there's enough left to support the branches. 20250403_143920.jpg20250403_143930.jpg20250403_143941.jpg20250403_144101.jpg20250403_144110.jpg
I buried the chopped root in the pot again. Will it grow?

It's not much of a tree yet, but it could make a nice twin trunk composition in a few years.

I wasn't sure which category to put this in. It's not really deciduous or a conifer, so miscellaneous seemed to fit. But I also was questioning root cutting propagation, so it could have fit there as well.
I'm not sure what exact species or cultivar this is, either. I would guess it's a wild hybrid of some kind. I will post pics once it is leafed out. It was defoliated last month to eliminate and prevent a reinfestation of woolly oak gall. All leaves were disposed of.

Oaks are not on my list of trees that grow from root cuttings but unusual things have ben known to happen. It certainly won't hurt to keep that root cutting and see what happens.
