I have a large japanese maple i planted in the ground this spring. I want to air layer it next season for the lower trunk (trunk chop).
Can I collect the maple and pot it in late winter (or should i do it now?) if i do not disturb the roots to much (only been in ground since april). Then in spring, can i start a layer on the trunk?
Or should i layer off the top, then start to train it while in the ground next season, then pull it the next year and pot?
I live in southern alabama.
