I hoped my Coast Redwood would grow up to be a formal upright, but it looks like it wants to be a raft. Should I encourage it? If so, how?

That’s a big no also. I just slip potted one today that had given me trouble last spring by pushing outa low branch below grade that wanted to tilt the tree.

Get a stick and straighten her out unless you have a better idea.

Two votes no. I’m curious to know why. Is it not worth the effort? Too difficult for a beginner? Some other reason?

I say go for it if you want to support your coast redwood to be a raft. It'd be interesting to see the transformation. Update us/me haha :)

I say let it grow a thick trunk in the ground for 2,000 years.

Rafts aren’t hard at all to get started. Fun for anyone.

imho The best are sinuous and that will be hard to pull off at this stage. Also and perhaps more important there is an issue of burgeoning growth and thus scaling (and separation) to to deal with that will make creating a convincing Redwood raft a challenge…. and lots of care.

But your tree your choice!

Cheers
