I got my hands on a few pallets and made a dozen or so 16"x16"x5" grow boxes. Last year my lady got me 3 Shimpaku seedlings. They have since outgrown their baskets so I removed the wire and repotted them to the grow boxes.

Their trunks are around 3/4" now. I figure I will give them a few more years. I will rewire them some time next year.

Are these currently multi trunk bushes?
They each have a main trunk that I have shaped. The branches that are really close to the ground will be trimmed off later. Last year they grew some long whips. Right now I am leaving them on the trees to fatten the trunks as fast as they can grow.

Those grow out boxes came out really good. I would screw some 2x2's on two opposing sides to help when picking them up.

I love free wood, people dont know that a lot of pallets are made with hardwoods.

How do I save these 2 Shimpakus? They have been battered by two major hurricanes, doused in salt water and left alone to nature without watering for 70 days.

Still some green, so I’d prune away the dead foliage and hope for the best in the Spring, bet they live. Sorry about your run of bad luck in the hurricanes. Been a crazy year.

After being battered by two major hurricanes, the Shimpakus could not take the punishment of the cold winter, especially when I am not able to be around to care for them. Perhaps some day I will get another one going but for now, it will be just a dream.
