Chrysanthemums as Bonsai, or Kusamono or Sanyasou

Yes, very top heavy. It was just a cutting this spring. They grow very fast
From what I see looks like I really neglected mine as most didn't grow much this year, and they were not in full sun (partial shade at best). Hopefully next season I grow make something worth showing.

They look fantastic! How long do you leave the wire on for?
thanx! And Too long lol :). These can have all the wire taken off and it won’t change at all I thnk. but I got so used to seeing them with wire on it Only bothers me after I takena picture.

how long?, not sure actually, some A couple of months, others was just a few weeks.
I wire loosely first and also leave the wire long so I can easily wire new growth.
that is something I recommend. Looks ugly but so helpful

the last one to bloom. It took a long time. Probably some late pruning involved.
pretty much in full bloom now finally so one more update.

I've brought all mine inside to my grow station. They are all back under lights and have reverted back to the growing mode. So I think I will grow them out for winter and spring. Then in summer I will force bloom them.

It’s been quit fun to grow these. Kinda cool you can make these “bonsai” in less then a year. That might actually be a good subject for a contest.

mine will remain outside for the winter. I hope some will survive. it Doesn’t go below zero that often here so I might bring some in when that happens. Or perhaps some plastic cover imaginary green house. I’ll think about it

Wow, there are some sweet chrysanthemums in this thread. Very impressed!

I don't have any Japanese varieties, but I have a garden-variety mum that's pushing 5 or 6 years old. Today I stuck it in a bonsai pot. I hope it survives at least one more year and I can get a nice bloom out of it.

I don’t suppose anyone knows where I can purchase any of these Japanese cultivars in Europe or particularly the U.K. After reading Bill’s blog I’ve been bitten by the bug but the best I’ve achieved so far is some Chrysanthemum Nipponicum seed. I have four seedlings from my efforts but would love to get hold of others. Any ideas?
I found this site, as I've also been looking. Will be ordering and will see what comes. Seems promising.

I'm so happy I found this thread, but totally bummed that King's Mums is totally sold out for 2021. Anyone have any cuttings for sale?

@thams .........you do know I have the dwarf mums as well. I will start cuttings probably next month. Which ones were you interested in?

Of course I need all of them... I DO NOT need another bonsai rabbit hole to go down, but here I am ready to jump in head first.

Has anyone tried to further hybridize these? I think it would be an interesting experiment with a possibility of many different flower colors. I guess the key would be for the crosses to retain the woody stems and low, compact growth habit. Maybe I'll give it a shot after getting my hands on some cuttings. I noticed there are a few more cultivars that King's Mums recommends for tree form that aren't under the gnomes category. I need to get my hands on those next season.
