I have a moderately sized Neea buxifolia- just from how the wood and bark look and behave, it seems that it would have trouble closing wounds. But, as it stands, it has a stretch of taper less wood that I could easily lobb off. How well does this species backbud and recover from this? I'm worried about dieback killing the darn thing.

You are right to worry the wound will not close, because it generally won't on anything over 1". You can strip the bark despite it being a tropical the wood is very rot resistant.. It also has a characteristic of large tubules in the grain, so plan ahead for that on any deadwood.
