Chinese Fringe Flower Loropetalum Chinensis as Bonsai

I could ask the one nursery I go to...when it comes to shrubs/trees they only carry native friendly. If they feel it wouldn't work outside...then they would say so...but, thinking with our -22F they wouldn't bring them in. But...a controlled environment such a cold house might work to a degree.

This plant is not an evergreen. They lose their leaves in winter and grow back when it warms up. They do fine here in Fresno even down to the teens in the winter.
Well, the U.S. National Arboretum calls two of them "evergreen to semi-evergreen" and used as a "sheared evergreen hedge" so at least we can use them: http://www.usna.usda.gov/Newintro/loro.pdf . Realistically, they're kind of leggy so no one is probably going to use them anyway.

A quick google says hardy to zone 7 - cold injury may occur at 0 to 5 deg.F
http://www.usna.usda.gov/Newintro/loro.pdf

Additionally, they come from China, Japan and South East Asia.

Then most likely not a good choice for my zone...with trees in pots I was told to consider them another zone up. So it would be like a zone 8 then in pot.

Well, they are in the witch hazel family and that makes them deciduous, period according to taxonomy. My elms here keep their leaves all year long does that make them semi evergreen?

Ha, so we just put the potted plant into the growing trough.
See you in 3 to 5.
Thanks a million to all for the discussion!!

Wow beautiful color. I have 3 Chinese fringe trees.
Maybe i was told wrong about the species as these look lots different. I have had them 11 yes ( they were already some years) and not one bloom.
I read it could take 12 years for them to bloom. Have no idea what color they are.
Its just been clip n grow and leaf/root reduction lots of neglect as they aren't that interesting with no blooms.
Maybe this is the year they will bloom..lol.
Maybe I should just plant them in the ground for a couple years.

Definitely evergreen and even in colanders they winter fine here. The buds are barely starting to swell whereas most things are already popping.

Must be a regional thing. Mine have never lost a leaf even into the teens. Mother nature is so cool!

These are a great tree for pot culture as regular landscape trees for a garden or for Bonsai! Very popular in southern states as landscape trees... Makes an interesting "alternative" option for the upcoming Spring Boxstore challenge also, as these are pretty easy to find at the big nurseries!
This is the first thing that pops into mind when I think of.the challenge rules! These are one of my favorite species for bonsai.

Really? Perhaps different varieties respond differently to cold weather. None of the ones I have owned here in SC have ever dropped their leaves in the winter. They may lose a few, but no more than an azalea or... Boxwood might. My Mother has a bunch as well and they never lose their leaves either.

IMG_0851.jpg IMG_1546.jpg IMG_2573-1.jpg IMG_4936.jpg I started mine two years ago from home depot.. put it in a five gallon bucket to thicken up, chopped it and wired up a new leader and started developing branches. It is the fastest growing plant I've worked with and is extremely hardy. I haven't ever cut anything down to no leaves if I planned on keeping it. It has developed quite fastand it will get a proper repot this year. First pic is when I got it and last picture is now. The leader still.needs to.thicken up a bit but I think its developing into something nice and I totallg agree about them being under used. I will probably use one for the challenge.

Very nice work developing them from a Home Depot plant! Trunk base seems to be over an inch thick. I like your literati, would be so cool to see flowers all over the top. A literati wearing a flower hat.

Rose Mary,
Can't tell whether yours are Chinese fringe flowers or not. You certainly have a lot of patient waiting for them to flower. May be you can find a nursery with trees to compare their barks and leaves. Their mature leaves are somewhat coarse to the touch. They like acidic soil, not sure if that is the cause for not flowering. You may try to fertilize with high P number azalea or camellia fertilizer.

But great to hear that they are hardy so far north. Just found this site, it says the fringe flower may be hardy to about 10F or may be even 5F.

Wait.. You said they are evergreen, but they are not in leaf right now?

The bark, growth pattern, and the fact they have lost their leaves tells me these are not likely CFF!

I tried to change my post...it was supposed to say NOT evergreen.

Rats, have kept them going for years waiting for them to start to bloom. When I got them I looked them up and it showed a tree covered with white blooms. The book said the small white flowers hang below the leaves -showy etc.

From your photos, I understood you meant not evergreen. A frequent omission when we type. The white blooms are also very pretty. Hope they flower for you soon.
