So yesterday the apex of my elm looked normal, but I noticed the bark had changed to a darker color than the rest of the tree. This morning when I was watering I noticed that the top was pretty close to being dead. Does anyone have any thoughts? I looked for the normal pests, but did not note any signs.

As a side note and history for the tree, I carved out the dead wood from a bad nursery cut, but stopped at live wood about a month and a half ago. Im guessing this may be playing a part. Also when I got the tree back in january as something to tinker with as I got back into bonsai, I bought some of the nursery's soil, thinking ill let it stay in this for a year and replace it with mine next year. The soil was fairly heavy with organics. It drains ok, but could deffinately be faster. I bacame concerned with the soil about two to three weeks ago as I noticed that the leaves were looking a bit coppery. That for the most part has gone away.

I had plans for getting some more movement in the top, but I think those might have been changed for now.

Anyways here are some pics. Let me know your thoughts goos or bad.

You will find that you need to leave a stub (with some trees more than others) for dieback when you are cutting. You can always go back and then recut after the dieback is complete, being careful around growth that you want to keep.
