Had a professional photographer friend of mine come over to take some photos of some of my trees…

Still searching for a rugged looking 18-22” round drum pot for this guy, so if anyone knows a source, please let me know!!!

Something like this would be great…

Thinking of putting it in this sand colored oval pot if I’m unable to find exactly what I’m looking for by next spring when I repot…

August 2023:

Wire was starting to bite on certain branches, so the wire was removed. Other branches were wired/rewired and moved into position.

The tree was then heavily pinched for the last time this season. The large “defining” branch on the left of the tree was removed, which really highlights the dome shape of the canopy, which is filling in nicely.

Still hoping/praying that the tree will back-bud closer to the trunk, but not holding my breath. This tree will be quite the challenge to maintain as a bonsai.

Also, pictures do not do this tree justice. It is very difficult to photograph so I’m planning to have a professional photographer friend of mine come out to take some better pictures of the tree.

Also, still taking suggestions of where to locate a larger drum pot for this tree. 18-20” diameter would work, as this tree is roughly 32” tall from soil to apex.

Next update coming soon…
Looks amazing to me.. I think you did a good job with the pictures. I have a couple of trees that look much better in person then in pictures. My old gold has Leggy growth and reminds me of your tree in some ways. It looks much better in person too.

Looking forward to it...

January 2024

Due to the two large maple trees in my yard losing their leaves, the tree has been getting a lot more sun and is turning more “golden” now.

Some of the foliage is starting to brown and drop, which is to be expected, but the tree will green up again in the spring. I’ve placed it on the ground to overwinter it and keep it out of the wind.

Really looking forward to repotting into a larger, more shallow pot in a few months.

Still on the lookout for a rugged drum pot 18-22” in diameter that doesn’t cost a fortune, but I have this sand-colored oval pot I’m thinking of putting it in until the perfect pot can be located.

IMG_1883.jpeg

This pot is 20 1/4” x 15 1/4” x 3 3/8” so its size should compliment the tree nicely, I just wish it was darker.

I should only have to take just over an inch of roots off to get it into this pot and I will be offsetting it from the center. Photoshop picture will be posted at some point.

Next update will be in the spring after the repot!!!

April 2024

Removing some of the wires that are just starting to bite in. I only remove as much wire as will keep the branch in position. If the branch moves after unwinding a coil, I cut the wire and stop unwinding it to help maintain the branch’s position.

I even had a little helper…

Planning to rewire certain branches into place and do an initial wiring on some other branches that needed to lengthen. I will also be removing some of the redundant branches I only kept as insurance in case one died.

Also planning to bring down a branch on the left to fill that gap…

Once the tree starts growing again, I’m planning to do a light repotting into this shallower, but larger, sand colored pot...

IMG_1883.jpeg

I would have rather put it in something darker and round, but I couldn’t find the size I wanted, so this will have to do. It should look pretty nice, but I guess we will find out!

This new pot is about 5-6” wider than the current pot, and a couple inches shallower, which will make the composition shorter, and make the tree seem even larger. Hopefully it will finally fit in my car afterward…

Next update will be after the repot!

My landscape experience is that they will back bud in locations where they did not get light at first but then were opened up to light. So just like your early massive thinning, I would pump the tree up and get it super vigorous, then do another thinning out, leaving foliage on branches you want to keep / develop.

My thoughts exactly, and this is one of the reasons it’s going in a bigger pot, more room for the roots to run, and hopefully it pumps the tree up enough to backbud.

Also planning to fertilize heavily once the tree recovers from the repotting, using a fertilizer with a high “P” number (NPK) to help aid in backbudding…

April 2024

Couldn’t resist moving branches into place to get the dome shape of the canopy a bit tighter, as I won’t be doing much styling after the repot…

The tree is really starting to take shape now and I can’t wait to see it in the new pot, which I’m planning to do next week…
