Cedar Elm Anyone?

Don't want to totally hijack the thread but can someone explain how to differentiate between american and cedar elm? Is it the asymmetrical leaves of the American elm?

Probably the leaf size. Cedar elm leaves are also like sandpaper.

Even that will be difficult since "cedar elm" as I know them are hybrids...since they cross-pollinate with other elms. The ones I have actually behave differently and have different; growth rate, leaf size, winged & not, bark patterns, etc.

Over all though the leaves are usually no more than 1" and some are just 1/4" w/o me trying to reduce it yet. To me that is an amazing trait.

Chad

The American Elm when it first pushes in Spring the little "bumps" are dark red. A less reliable but works for me is to let one leaf grow out. If it goes to 7 inches or longer it is most likely an American Elm.

I've been growing out some American Elm seedlings that I found in my yard. One other difference I've found is that the leaves on the Cedar Elm are much rougher, almost like light sandpaper.
