Good material for staters. You definitely need to cut the branches back to the point where they start to be boring. I think they should stay 5-10 cm long max. From there it could be regrown with annual wiring and cutting back.

Yeah I was thinking about reducing with heading cuts.

Healthy hornbeam will pop buds all over the place, if sunlight gets in. But.. Best to get the structure set, no? I think cutting them sorter will get you better taper. Short-term ugliness for long-term beauty?
