Updates after a year.
First, the deaths:
#2: Chamaecyparis lawsoniana "Elwoodii" or "Lawson Cypress" (Killed by cold)
#6: Pinus pinea - Italian Stone Pine (probably was DOA)
Then, the rest:
#1: Thuja occidentalis "Smaragd" or "Emerald Green Arborvitae"
Repotted and just left to grow out of fear of doing too much. In reality, I could have probably ripped this out of its pot, drop-kicked it into the driveway, and backed over it and it would be fine. Grew so many roots that the soil is spilling from the pot. It's time to style and I'm lost with this bush. I kind of want to wait until it's frozen and snap it off about 1/3 of the way up and go from there. It needs to lose a lot of height and roots and find it's way into a smaller pot to work with the trunk size. But, I now know that thuja is basically idiot-proof.
#3 Picea glauca "Conica" - Dwarf Alberta Spruce
Survived its spring repot fine and grew a little. Lots of healthy buds for the spring. This will never be anything too interesting in 2 more years, but my first goal is alive. Will start thinning some weak branches this winter and reducing the whorls. The trunk has whitened quite a bit and I'm not sure if this was due to sunlight, response to the needle plucking that I did last winter, or hard water drying on the trunk. Anyway, I like the whitening.
#4 Juniperus horizontalis "Wiltonii" - Blue Rug Juniper
Did nothing to it except water and fertilizer. Let it grow, which it did. Will repot in the spring and may start styling a cascade.
#5 Araucaria heterophylla - Norfolk Island Pine
Yeah, no. I took the advice of members here and kept this $2.00 thing for a houseplant. I see Nigel Saunders has a little forest that he's been keeping alive for several years, but it has not improved in any appreciable way in that time. So, not worth my time. It did grow like crazy outside this year though after basically being dead when I bought it on clearance.
