Can I wire and carve Ume now or should I wait till mid may?

Im bored and I have several collected Ume from last spring to play with, can I put some wire on and do some carving now or wait till mid May? Thanks

Not sure if carving is advisable but you can definitely wire them now

You can refine existing deadwood on any tree during the dormant season, but I am generally reluctant to create new deadwood or carve into the living wood of trees while dormant as the delayed healing response makes them more susceptible to disease or die back.
