Can I air layer the trunk of this Bald Cypress?

I imagine it wouldn't work in a bucket of water. I currently have some 3/4" cuttings that had some interesting movement, in perlite, sat in water, with a plastic bag over top. They're indoors but will go under grow light soon. Hoping those root but give it a 20% chance or less . they're still alive after at least 2 months though.

I know that @19Mateo83 has done some decent cuttings. This is not a willow, but who knows...
I have had success with cuttings up to 1 1/2 inch thick. I used 1% IBA rooting hormone and put them in pure pumice and kept them submerged in water. In my experience they take about two months to start putting out roots.

@Cajunrider or anyone else, has anyone tried just cutting the top of one of these BC off and sticking it in a bucket of water, like a big hardwood cutting?
@19Mateo83 has done a successful cutting of decent size as shown in the link below. Plus I know some nurseries has done big scale cuttings of BC.

I didn't use rooting hormone. Will find out if it works without

It seems that the tree has gone dormant. I assume because it was in a pot that it went dormant earlier than the other BC in the area? The BC here have all pretty much lost their leaves and developed the seed pods.

I think I’m going to just chop it. I already have a ton of trees that I need to transport 1200 miles. I don’t want anymore to worry about lol

Would it be a good idea to chop the tree now and do root work or should I wait closer to spring? Spring here is usually around late February/march but you never know with the weather in Florida these days.

I’m most worried now about the roots. If you refer back to the picture, they are horribly pot bound. The pot has actually split open completely. The tree is also using WAY less water which I assume is because it is dormant, but I don’t think that it sitting in that much stagnant water is beneficial at all when the roots are in such a disastrous state.

Appreciate all of your advice!

If you are in Zone 10, temperatures are still high enough for roots to grow albeit slowly & I would chop now. If you are in Zone 9 I would wait until February. If you are in Zone 8 or lower, I would wait until March.

Thanks for the advice. I will wait until February. You are a legend.
I like that. Wait til at least mid February and do the chop and root work all at once. Then leave the tree alone to recover until you move.
