But SH** it was 99 cents!

I was joking. It shouldn't be that color. That is why it was so cheap.
My junipers turn colors for winter, just not this nice golden brown.
In the spring I don't think you should fool around with it too much. If it is alive then just try to get it healthy again. By only watering as needed, maybe misting, fertilizing if it shows signs of growing. Maybe only slip pot it up to a larger size bucket.

I'd be worried. Remember a juniper can take weeks to start looking ill, and buy then it's often too late. This one looks pretty far gone, to me.

No one knows if this tree will make it or not..only the tree knows..we can only guess by our experiences, but the real truth is in the tree. Store the tree for winter and in the spring the OP will know

Not even the tree knows. They are not thinking, knowing things. People can predict based on experience. I predict that if this guy is new to bonsai, this tree will be dead in 18 months, even if the tree is healthier than the pix portray. I didn't have many trees that made it more than 18 months in my first few years. If trees were thinking, knowing things, it might be difficult to convince many of them to hop in a bonsai pot for a haircut every few months.

What I meant by that was if the tree has roots that are alive and foliage that's alive it will probably make it. As for as predicting if the tree will be dead in 18 months if they are new to bonsai I can't and won't do that. I have killed several trees since I started, but that was due to my stupidity and impatience. I do still have my very first tree and its going strong.

I'll keep everyone updated on the health of the tree come spring. Should be interesting to see if it pulls through alright

I would argue that they are. No, they do not have a brain, but they can do some pretty amazing things that scientists are just starting to discover.

One example, trees can't talk or communicate with sound, but they did evolve to chemically communicate with other trees. When a tree is being attacked by an insect, it releases chemicals in the air that can warn other trees. Pretty cool stuff!!! :)
