Hey y’all, I recently purchased a Chinese elm at a great bonsai store in San Diego. Brought it back home on the plane with me and I’m wondering if the tree might be stressed going into a real winter dormancy as I don’t think it has ever seen Maryland winters before. I plan on potting it in mid January/ early February while still dormant so any tips would be great. This is my first Chinese elm also.70133D92-DFFF-41CC-B269-020B066ABFDF.jpeg

All my Chinese Elms are for Cali as well. I repot my elms in the early spring. Last fall they held onto their leaves well into late November. I overwintered them in my greenhouse that did not go below 20 degrees and they all made it and grew happily this year.

Repot when the buds swell, you are keeping the elm outdoors?

I just got home with it so haven’t decided. I was planning on keeping it outdoors year round but I’m open to other options
