Bougainvillea in Memoriam

The white ones are actually the flowers, the colored leaves are called "bracts" and the flowers grow from them.

Yes, Dario and Ed are right but this did not end up flowering. New growth seems to have a reddish tinge though.

After its hedge prune last night. It really had a lot of leaves...

I got this into a new pot by a local potter, not sure which one but they sell at NE bonsai. Finished actually defoliating it as well, it looks like it will pop right back. The old pot was too large, and red...

How small can you get the leaves to reduce on yours? I have one roughly that size that I have been letting grow unrestrained in an eight inch bulb pan since I got it last year. The trunk has at least doubled if not tripled in size from all of the growth, but I am wondering how large I should try to get it so that I can have appropriately size leaves.

So far, I have noticed that the leaves stay pretty big for a shohin. I'm guessing they won't reduce much more than what you see on yours but I don't have enough experience to say with certainty. This one seems to get very dense, not sure if you've noticed the same.

It has leaves again. I was a little worried about the cold snap but its doing just fine. I haven't gotten bougain yet and will make sure I have it for next year.

What a special meaningful behind this Bougainvillea...heart felt condolences...it is never easy losing a loved one...what a great gift this was for your grandfather...to see it in bloom at that! Every time it blooms...you can know that it brought him great joy.

Thanks for sharing...I see you put yours in a smaller pot...where I am actually going to increase my pot size to beef up the trunk. But first...I need to learn how I want to display it before I jump the gun.

Have you purchased the bougain yet? They list plant food and fertilizer named bougain...does one use both products or just the one?

I have not purchased the bougain yet, I assume one is a slow release granule while there is also the once a week liquid fert. If you're going to a bigger pot you definitely won't havea problem of repotting this.

That makes perfectly good sense! Going to definitely go with a penjing style water and land feature. My gerbil is running so fast with this...can't wait to get the book I ordered for possible more ideas.

I made a slight tweak to the apex, which I think looks much better. Unfortunately, I cracked the branch. Man these branches are brittle even when so thin! I taped it up I think it will be fine.

try superglue and a clothes pin or paper clip. After a day or so, you should be able to remove the pin/clip. Dont ask me why I know this works...

So far so good with the apex. Today is also day 1 of bougain. I hope I'll see it happy in the next month.

I am thinking about chopping and starting fresh since I snapped the apex fiddling with it. Would this work better anyway? The long straight section bothers me.
