The white ones are actually the flowers, the colored leaves are called "bracts" and the flowers grow from them.

How small can you get the leaves to reduce on yours? I have one roughly that size that I have been letting grow unrestrained in an eight inch bulb pan since I got it last year. The trunk has at least doubled if not tripled in size from all of the growth, but I am wondering how large I should try to get it so that I can have appropriately size leaves.
I have not purchased the bougain yet, I assume one is a slow release granule while there is also the once a week liquid fert. If you're going to a bigger pot you definitely won't havea problem of repotting this. What a special meaningful behind this Bougainvillea...heart felt condolences...it is never easy losing a loved one...what a great gift this was for your grandfather...to see it in bloom at that! Every time it blooms...you can know that it brought him great joy.
Thanks for sharing...I see you put yours in a smaller pot...where I am actually going to increase my pot size to beef up the trunk. But first...I need to learn how I want to display it before I jump the gun.
Have you purchased the bougain yet? They list plant food and fertilizer named bougain...does one use both products or just the one?

try superglue and a clothes pin or paper clip. After a day or so, you should be able to remove the pin/clip. Dont ask me why I know this works...I made a slight tweak to the apex, which I think looks much better. Unfortunately, I cracked the branch. Man these branches are brittle even when so thin! I taped it up I think it will be fine.
