Hello,

I am VP of the Bonsai Society of the Carolinas. We typically meet on the second Saturday of each month at 10 am. We also sprinkle in additional events. The meeting locations vary but we are in or around Charlotte, NC

Check out our website www.bonsaicarolina.org

I am excited to annouce that
Julian Tsai, bonsai professional from southern California, and trained at Fujikawa Kouka-en in Osaka, Japan will be flying in and offering a weekend of events for BSOC members that you dont want to miss!

A deciduous and broadleaf evergreen demonstration and workshop is on November 2, 2024 at Robinson Presbyterian Church from 10 am to about 12:30. Following the demo, we will have a Satsuki Azalea workshop where 3-gallon Wakaebisu Azaleas will be provided, and paying attendees will work with Julian to develop a future bonsai. The cost for the Azalea workshop is $50 and the trees are provided. Limit 8-spots. Please sign up on the Website and then pay via https://www.paypal.com/ncp/payment/TH25F43Q9YHNQ.

The demo will be at Robinson Presbyterian Church from 10 am to about 12:30 and is free to attend!

The Azalea workshop will be at Reedy Creek Park, picnic shelter #5 after the Demo. We will start around 1:30 pm. You must be pay at time of registration.

Is membership necessary to take the BYOT workshop? What is the cost of membership?

Hey, yes membership is required for the workshops. A $50 membership bought in October will last through the next year. Tons of value in the membership including a free bonsai 101 with 1 gal Procumbens, annual picnic and auction, Christmas party, a couple nationally recognized professional demos / workshops, raffles with lots of cheap goods, etc.
Go to our webpage and click on the envelope link to register your info and receive newsletter. You can pay for membership when you come to the next meeting or We/I can send you a link to Paypal.
Let me know if you have any other questions.

Most of the 2025 calendar is posted on our website. See the website link in my signature. We meet in and around Charlotte, NC on the second Saturday each month.

Januarys meeting is postponed until Jan 25th due to weather. Its yamadori collection on about 30 acres of hardwood forest and Bella Bonsai 50% off sale.

Some notable events include a repotting workshop at Bonsai Learning Center in March; a forest design and workshop in May; Big Chops in June; Tyler Sherrod in July; potters workshop at Preston Tolberts potting studio in August. I have a couple other fun ones pending, too.

The BSOC had its club show at the Cabarrus County Arena's Annual Plant and Herb show. We were set up in a beautiful 40'x40' location in the foyer of one of their buildings. We got a ton of traffic and interest from the plant community. It helped that the vendors and shoppers had to pass right through us to get to the restrooms, haha.
The goal was to help educate ourselves, members and community on all the pieces that are involved in displaying our trees. It is amazing how educational an event like this is. For me, I noticed more minor details in my tree and I manicured my display to the fullest - which I would likely not have done otherwise.
Another goal is to grow the club and share the love of bonsai. The people that visited were so curious; they asked good questions and sparked excitement in us. I think the feeling was often mutual.
We plan to build on this event next year by knowing the space better and expanding with a sales and demo area on another end of the foyer.
We learned alot and had a ton of fun. Thanks to all the volunteers and participants. Thank you to Cabarrus County Arena. Heres some pics

Here is my display. Grey Owl Juniper and a generic pink Azalea. Peak flowers should be here this week, unfortunately a week late.

We set up a table for peoples choice voting. Here was the winner (Boxwood on right).

The one on the left is a Hubei Ash that one of our members sourced as a seed from China 25-30 years ago. I hear these are impossible to get in the states now. I really like the tree. It has small leaves, deadwood and a dynamic design. Not something you see on deciduous often.
