Bonsai Log

I built my own. It has a section for listing plants in my personal collection plus a "stock" section for trees that are for sale. It tracks pictures, has activity logs, you can record reminders, spray records, notes, financials, inventory pots, and more. Pretty robust, I couldn't find one that did all that I wanted it to. Not perfect but I like it.

You're welcome to use it if you have an iPhone or iPad (no Android app yet). Just download the free FileMaker Go app and download the file below.

I use Piwigo for my photos, and YesWiki for text and photos.
It means buying your own domain, but that's not that expensive. Free of ads, unless you want to make a few cents from each visitor.

It's mainly for myself, to keep track of what I'm doing, and for a few friends, no buisiness, no profit intended...

I created an Excel sheet to use as a basic calendar. I copied the timing on everything from the Bonsai Society of San Francisco PDF. I made it so it highlights the Action and Month for whatever cell you click.

I'd be willing to share the file, but please note that the timing would have to be adjusted to your climate and liking. I used their timing as a base and will adjust accordingly for my climate. They have 0-10-10 fertilizing a lot on here, but B-nutters seem to think it's a waste. Adjust for your own needs.

I'm not sure if it's cool to share Excel files, so PM me if you want the file.

I'd like this spreadsheet. Will try to PM

I use the PC version of Bonsai Album.
I also have Bonsai Album. It would be fine, except that there is no Android version to sync with m PC. At this point I have 30 trees in it. Maybe I'll try the very old OT2 just to see what happens.

I probably should use some kind of ledger. I’ve just been going by memory.
I use this site to log some of my trees. The rest is by the seat of my pants.

I was looking to start a thread, but this seems to be a more appropriate place to keep info more accessible in one place. I tend to be a jack of all trades trying to master too many kind of person when it comes to hobbies and interests. This is probably going to be a winded as a response to a thread, but probably still beats starting a new one.
I am always really impressed when someone comes into a hobby group with an organized approach that they will be able to carry all the way from day one. Sometimes it's someone who has logged every round of disc golf they have played since day one and catalog all their purchases or someone who is getting into cars or bikes as a hobby and begin tracking builds, miles and issues right off the bat.
Well bonsai may be the first hobby that I am starting fresh with any foresight. Maybe I am giving myself a leg up cause it was not one I just jumped into, but was actually reading/learning for a while before actually starting.

I decided to start my own log, I am sure I will find some info unnecessary and even more that I wish I had thought of initially. With 4 nursery trees and some cuttings I have been starting I am already modifying a lot as I go. I am also keeping a paper log, because I enjoy pen on paper but its hard to beat the amount of info you can organize in a spreadsheet. The ability to add links to tabs and add columns etc. is unbeatable on paper with my (lack of) foresight.

This is a link to a "dummy" spreadsheet I am keeping as a share file (maybe someone else can use it as a starting point) as well as backup templates incase I manage to delete tabs on my existing one. I will try to keep the Share file updated as I modify the original, and hell maybe someday I will replace the share file with my actual spreadsheet and y'all can see how little I really know...

Again, while mostly blank most any info in the spreadsheet may just be made up as demonstration not necessarily my actual purchases or trees. Disclaimer I am far from an office guy, I am an ex-restaurant owner/current tradesman who has fumbled his way around excel/sheets enough to keep books and maybe do some estimating (Or am a I pro in disguise. I even managed a SUM equation on the purchases sheet ). Any tips or help streamlining things would be appreciated.

I tried to keep all my schedules in a notebook...

It became much MORE "hectic" than my other way!

...

Soooo BACK to operating "from the seat of my pants", also!

🤣

I've been using Notion for my journaling. It has full markup capabilities, built in databases (spreadsheets basically), great photo embeds, smart reminders/date features, and best of all, it's free to share links to it!

Here's an example page if you're interested.

Using Bonsai Care App (iOS, MacOS, Android), made by the team from Bonsai Empire, for a while now. Development is ongoing and apart from one feature (journaling) , I love it.
You can determine your own notifications about, watering, pruning, etc. You can try it for free with a couple of trees. And there is also an export feature (comma separated file .cvs)
