Latest pic this afternoon. I'll take a look at the roots this Winter and assess if it can go straight into a smaller pot or if it needs a more staged approach. I think this one could be a keeper, at least for the medium term. The base is a shade over 10 inches.
This is a beautiful tree. What a fortunate find, but the work done is lovely.
I did wonder if it was not a blackthorn when I first saw it actually. The colour of new growth, leaf shape, bark and habit look pretty similar to the Mirabelle plums we get round here (P. Domestica ssp Syriaca). Might be worth a look if you really want to ID it.
I was looking through a few likely alternatives like Mahaleb & Cerasifera and I think you're probably right. It seems the closest match. If it decides to flower that'll be the dead giveaway. Thanks for the suggestion, much appreciated
