Big bending

An educational experiment.

1. Get a book and try to roll it. Notice how the ends that used to form 90 degrees is now in a slope?

2. Now try to bend it then bend it back forming an S. Depending on how well you do it, your end could end up forming a perfect 90 degrees again.

Want to go further?

3. Find an old magazine about 1/2" thick and cut a strip as wide as the thickness. Do the same experiment as above.

4. Try to bend it while twisting it.

Want go further yet???

5. Apply glue at the other end and do the whole exercise again. Noticed the crush areas?

6. One step further, apply glue at the cut sides also then re-do all the exercise above. Notice how much more difficult it is to bend now? Notice failure points on the glue?

Very nice & easy way to see what happens (somewhat) to the wood grain/fiber as it is bent. TRY IT!!! :)
