Hi to all!! Here my second post about my Japanese Maples. All the JM are moving to wonderful colors these days, some are starting to lose their leaves...so it's good time to start some pruning!!

This is my beloved Beni Maiko. Started in 2017 as a little nursery stock Maple, Is showing his autumn colors.

I will update in the picture after pruning...😉

An update...Ok with this I've gone heavy with pruning, but the branches had something "messy" that I didn't like. Another little step in training....

Very nice structure. I don't see a graft union either. :)

I have one that I'm developing as a multi trunk, and plan to layer off the rootstock in the next year or two.

Curious to see your beni Maiko (love multitrunk style), i found it's a very strong cultivar, hot and sun resistant 👍

Yeah what's up with that? Did you airlayer from nursery stock or is it just really well hidden?

Simply well hidden 😉. Every time I try to find an "invisibile" graft when I wanna buy a nursery stock Maple...not always Easy!

I'll see what I can do about a photo. There's not much to look at yet. It's just a standard grafted piece of stock. (I don't have any nurseries anywhere near me with JM cultivars so I just order online with the assumption that I'll layer or take cuttings unless I get lucky with a clean graft.) - This tree was actually eaten nearly down to the graft by our pet rabbit when someone left the gate to the garden open. From there it sent out several new shoots that I just recently wired up with movement. The plan is to let those set in place and then layer either 2024 or 2025.

How well does Beni maiko air layer? I've got a half dozen or so grafted liners that I might do that with in a couple years.

According to this post it does layer.

I haven't tried yet myself, but the thread @TrevorLarsen posted above has been very helpful to me, and a couple of members there have said that Beni maiko is easy to root by both cuttings and layers.
