Beginner with soil question

Can Bonsai be grown Hydroponiclly ?

This subject keeps coming up on the site. I don't know, but I think it is worth finding out. I am going to check with some sites that are really big into hydroponics and see if people have been successful keep woody plants - and at what sizes.

I think, at least theoretically, it would work, but I'd love to see some case studies.

Yes it can :)

Vario, here is what I use to keep my Bonsai healthy...for the last 10 years.
One Scoop (that comes with the Fertz) to 60 Oz of water or a Simply Juice bottle...
Once a month Fertz but water daily...

Thank you bolero! Glad to see I bought the same kind of fertilizer :D

Repotted the Parsons Juniper into a pond basket using similar techique as the San Jose.
San Jose is doing well 1 week after repotting.

The Parsons had pretty nice roots. It was putting out white rootlets and it had a lot of stringy roots, not very many big roots. The entire nursery pot was filled with root so it seems like a vigorous plant. I had to trim it back a tiny bit to get it into the pond planter. Unfortunately lost a small branch but it went well otherwise. This plant basically has a really long fairly thick whip like trunk that curves back around on top and theres a few secondary branches from the base. You can see this thicker branch on left side of the first image and right side of the second. I want to stake or wire it more vertical when it gets used to its new living arrangement.

These things are tanks.
I have 2 and the things they've been through would cuddle your blood.
I bare rooted them the first year I got them cut the roots back and put them in bonsai pots.
Yes I bare rooted them. On purpose. Washed the soil off with a hose, cut the roots back and did a complete soil change.
I also cut off massive amounts of foliage and wired them some that year.
They can take the cold very well. Mine have seen temps lower than 35 degrees below Fahrenheit.
They will put out juvenile foliage like mad when you cut them. I like it better than the scale foliage in fact. The adult foliage is kind of long and stringy.
They also have a nice bluish color to them.
I'll have to start a couple threads.
I need to take some pictures first.

Glad to hear because I barerooted both of these junipers LOL. I was worried if the soil was left it would concrete the roots so I blasted it with a hose before trimming them. I also had bare rooted the San Jose, its doing well now and seems to be growing on top already 8 days later.

Both are wired into the pot to hold it upright.

Should I stake or wire that long thick branch upright in the future? Thats the part I want to grow.

In the future.
The thing with junipers is they look alive when not.
Let them rest now because you did some pretty rough things to them.

Sounds good. Its in the shade for a few days to recover and I will keep it moist.

Started dunking these pond planters, seems to work way better at getting the soil 100% saturated, especially now with a hot summer coming.
