Beginner needs some advice

I have bought some nursery stock, a forsythia, boxwood, azalea, cryptomeria and Japanese pieris.
Forsythia is tough. No problem root pruning and top pruning in one operation.
Boxwood is a little less of sure thing. Take it a bit easier and let it recover between operations.
Azalea have no problem with both root prune and top prune at the same time but they do suffer from many other issues so sometimes they can die without us really knowing why.
Cryptomeria is conifer so be more gentle with all pruning above and below.
I haven't worked with Pieris so can't offer meaningful advice.
