I've been wanting a beauty berry tree for a while now. Bill V had several young beauty berry trees at his Open House today. This one had a some movement in the lower trunk so I couldn't resist.

Unfortunately, as hard as I tried, I couldn't get Bill to part with any of the nice shohin maple trees in his personal collection. But, I'll keep working on him every time I'm at his place :)

Cuttings root faster anything I have seen. Mine rooted in a couple of weeks and had filled up the plug in that time. I wound up with too many of them.

I was thinking of trying some cuttings next spring when I repot it into some bonsai soil and trim it back a little bit.

Never heard of this plant until this post but a quick google search lead me to another BonsaiNut BeautyBerry post! (Other thread) Looks like some other people have been looking for this fun little plant. Congrats on the find.

I have a bunch of American Beauty Berry in my yard. They look beautiful right now as they are full of berries. The berries are even edible. I just potted three saplings as my first attempt working on them

They seem to be such easy growers and fruiters, I expect to see more of these around. Nice pickup!
I've had one for 3 years, it grows fine but has never flowered or fruited. It's in full sun from spring to fall. I don't know what the problem is......:(

I have 3 different callicarpa I bought in 4" pots in the early spring. They have all done pretty well but the American one has excelled. It has been covered with berries for several weeks and is now about 10 inches tall and 12-14 inches across. Age has not been a factor in blooming. It gets partial sun partial shade.

How are those saplings doing?

Was just trying to find some info about American beauty berry as bonsai, I just rooted 6 cuttings from my brothers landscape bush, but the internodes and leaves are quite large

Hey, thanks for asking. I think this is a tough species for bonsai for the reasons you mentioned, but I'm giving it a shot too!
I put 3 of mine in small (quart size?) containers and 1 in a shohin pot that is about 5"x4" - far right.
I see some smaller leaves and internodes coming in on interior / lower growth in the ugly tan pot - 3rd right.
They seem to be fairly easy to transfer from ground. I noticed quite a bit of die back on anything I chop in my yard. Flowers are starting to come in and I'm hoping the see these flower before I prune. Will update if so.
Good luck with yours!

Looking good! Far right has a nice shape. The ones here have already flowered and been setting fruit for a couple weeks now. When I took the cuttings I actually had to cut the flowers off preparing them.

It sounds like they dieback if they are not cut to a bud or existing branch, good to know.

There have been a couple shown here that were marvelous. You might check the archives.

All mine are staying outside through winter. I moved in October so I had to split up a bunch of stuff amongst friends. I kept one with me and it's on the new townhome porch. I got a couple berries on one of then before winter (sorry no pics).
I'll let you know how they look in spring.
Best of luck!
