I am interested in collecting a green smooth petal with yellow flower Barberry from "The Farm" It is small perhaps 30 inches tall and 24 inches wide but appears healthy and in flower. My Wife wants to work a small one into her front landscape.

Spring here and I "think" a good time to trim pull and plant but not certain...

I have done similar with other shrubs keeping a decent amount of root and substrate and dropping it into the new location - same hold true for Barberry?

Thank you in advance,

Grimmy

Yup but wear heavy gloves.

Yes, and understood I am from NY where they commonly work them into landscape for Security cleverly planted under windows to deny unwanted access. I planned to get this one for her as she likes the color with her plans and it will be from her Grandparents farm. Nursery stock here seems to only offer wild colored varieties and I plan to kepp it a 2 foot plant just for looks.

I have 3 in pots. They are some tough customers. And like Jim mentioned, they fight back. They take a root pruning real well.

A couple of weeks ago I collected a large Barberry that was tossed on a cemetery's dump pile. It looked to have been there only a day or two, so I brought it home and potted it up. I am getting buds and leaves already, even though there weren't many roots on the tree. So far, I'd say they're tough.

BTW, I didn't lay this on its side, it had apparently grown this way and had roots along its length.

Good good, thank you!

Again good info and thank you! There are some monsters at the farm but I found a small one for my Wife to use in the front landscape. She wants the green with yellow flower and oddly the local nurseries just carry a few that are variegated looking in odd colors.

I think I'd bury the left side if the roots a bit more so the tree itself can be more upright. Those roots really aren't THAT attractive.
