Hi,
could you help me with identifaction of the problem with my common barberry?

I have bought it two months ago. The base of the tree was rotting due to neglection of previous owner. I have removed dead tissue and plenty of moss, secured parts of hardwood with lime sulphur (because previous owner started shari anyway) and then used fungicide. Tree seems to struggle, there are two very slowly growing shoots and leaves are gradually going yellow/purple/red and develop more and more spots. Is there any hope for this one? I have also used higher dose (recommended for trees in need) of superthrive.

First stop with the Superthrive. It's mostly worthless and may be a problem at higher doses

Second, if you have rot, this tree is probably too wet. The problem is with the roots. A pic of the soil would be very helpful in determining what's going on.

Soil is problematic. Previous owner obviously lied about soil composition, which supposed to be akadama/pumice/lava. Here’s his photo:

And here’s mine after i have received it:

You can obviously see organic dirt and few particles of akadama substitute. BUT it is draining very well and I have also added layer of proper akadama/pumice on bottom, top and edges. I water it only when top akadama layer, organic layer and toothpick are dry - about every 2-3 days. Also when I took tree out of pot (no rootwork, just check) roots seemed healthy.

Current soil, about two weeks ago:

I can’t really do much about it right now in summer. I’m just worried if it will survive until repot into inorganic mix in early spring. Should I somehow help it right now or just water carefully and hope for the best?

I think the soil will be fine until Spring. Give us an update when it’s time. I am interested in the outcome

I hope so :) I also hope it will wake up after wintering. It sucks that I probably have to wait with major work until late 2024 and give it time to properly regenerate. I'm also pissed off about many other auctions from guy, who sold me this one, where he claims his trees are in inorganic akadama/pumice/lava mix.
