Back again with a quick progression on this small barberry that I got this spring.
Here it is as I got it as nursery stock with buds just about ready to pop.
Gave it a hard cut back, repotted it, and put a couple pieces of wire on.
Managed to not cut off all the flowers, though after blooming, I did remove to prevent fruiting this season.
Left it alone besides some minor trimming of some interior and crotch buds. Everything grew pretty much right in the direction I wanted so I didn't have to put on any additional wire, besides guy wiring down the right branch a bit.
A few days ago, all the wire was removed and everything cut back to keep it compact. This guy got a bit sunburnt when it dried out during a long work day, but overall it's been a fun lil guy to work on. So that's a quick 5 month transformation of this one.
I have a couple different barberry projects I'm working on, and would love to see any that anyone's working on as well. From looking around it seems the only complaint people have for barberry is their thorns, but regardless, these spikey guys are quickly becoming one of my favorite species to work with. They seem to develop fairly quick, but we'll see how they do with ramification over the long run.
