Good afternoon friends, I normally buy Aoki bonsai soil and wanted to know if possibly this Japanese Premium Mix is better than what I have been using. It seems to be about 15% more cost, which is not an issue to me, but I was curious to see if anyone had experience or helpful feedback, thank you

I’ve used it in the past. Quality seemed good from what I can remember. Nothing about it set me off either direction.

Greetings. Looks like no specific trees were mentioned, so would need this information and stages of development to know for sure.

That said likely will work fine.

Also likely it would be better to just get the components in from US suppliers and mix ones own media.

This way one can make different mixes as needed for different species and stages of development

In addition, one should strongly consider properly recycling the media, adding more akadama as needed after recycling. This will not only save money, which doesn’t seems to be an issue in this case, but also is better for the environment.

Cheers

Thank you @Deep Sea Diver , my apologies for not being more thorough in my post. My main concern or curiosity was, is the double line Akadama of better quality than the Aladama that is used in the Aoki.

Absolutely no worries. This forum is an educational one imho, so feel free to ask away! It helps to provide those additional background details up front if one wants a speedy answer.

My thought on your question is likely not, however the only way to check for sure is to ask the processor in Japan what brand of akadama is being used.

I read/chatted through the grapevine during the COVID shutdown many of the media suppliers in Japan went bankrupt and there was a consolidation which resulted in only a 1-2 processors/overseas suppliers of hard akadama for bonsai use. Thus there may not be much choice of source on the aoki mixing side. That said in Japan there

All I’ve seen around here in the last three years is Ibaraki…

Cheers

Wow, that’s interesting. Good to know that both akadamas are probably very similar or even the same.
