Anyone dig honeysuckle this year

I just got a little one.. i have access to so many redicuolous old gnarly honey suckle I couldn't even decide.. next year ill probably take one of them.. curious to see what you do with this one.

do you have any species specific care info I should keep in mind? i hear they are pretty resilient but I still dont really want to dig an old one this late. do you seal the chops?

I ripped out an old one that was killing trees in the ravine. Nothing spectacular of the trunk...so it was just tossed into the compost area. Tore out also some on my pergola...right now, they aren't a big fan on my list for landscape. But, for bonsai they could be cool I would imagine. Just am tired messing with them...so didn't even bother trying.

No advice there new to me so I'll have to see how it goes. I know there's a decent amount of information on them online. Have a lot of old ones around my house and in the woods. This isn't the best but thought it was a good start to learn on. I'll see how this year goes and see about digging another one up early next year. As far as sealing the chops I do but I do it on anything I chop. I just use wood glue seems to work fine.

The one you have there is one of the "better" I have seen freshly collected as it is not a circular clump as most are. They back bud furious and honest - just don't let it dry right out - they need crap for care and soon get out of control once they start moving and are established.

Couple old giants I came across the other day

If you find a stout single trunk it will be worthwhile the trouble - dig any time in Spring. It is a shrub and treat it as one ;)

If either one of you recall when you buy a shrub from a Nursery they instruct you to dig, plant, and water regularly the first year - it works!

yea but what if you cut off 2 or 3 3" caliper limbs and dig it out of the ground after its in leaf? can I make a tree grow then? do you cut paste these things or just let em drain?

You are in Michigan and although it would be late for a lot of other things an established Honeysuckle "should" do fine with minimal aftercare. The Elmers glue for a sealant is enough and honest not because it will bleed but as a preventative for boring insects.

Well I figure it's like a weed and should grow like one. It's still fairly early, not in the middle of summer, figure it should make it. Going to keep it well watered like grimlore said and wait for new buds to start popping.

It was just too unusual to pass up. May never see a pot as the crazy roots are 4ft long. Over 2ft buried here. Was growing on a sandstone foundation of a bridge long gone at one of our sunset hangout spots.
Enjoying her by my lil pond in the yard for now and is doing very well.

Very nice underdog! This is something that I'm really starting to like about honeysuckle is that is very resilient and you can find some really nice ones with a little bit of searching.

Jap Honey is an invasive species here. ODNR wants you to burn them. Just doing my part to get them out of the wild.
You can tell by the hollow stems on the Jap Honeys.
This one found me while Jeeping w/the wife on a nice spring afternoon.

Yeah all the trunks on mine has a small whole down the center of them. I have one on the edge of my property that's about 9' tall. I had an old shed by it and burned the shed down late last year to get rid of the shed. It killed half the bush closest to the shed but already this year there's new growth coming off the dead side that's already about 3' tall. Have you gotten much growth off yours since digging it?

starting to flower today.
