I've looked at the other threads on the site and talked to the good folks in my club. Everyone says that's it's almost impossible to collect a rosemary. But I've learned right here that "there is no cannot" so I'm hoping to gather some opinions. Do you fine folks have any advice on pulling this guy out? Would it be best to trench it this year and go back next year? It's probably over 20 years old and has been planted in the ground all that time thriving; shrugging off snow, ice and rain storms in North Carolina. Almost a 3.5 inch diameter trunk. My buddy has no use for it and offered it to me.

Thoughts?

I have collected many rosemary's here in California with good success. I cut them back at the same time as I dig them. leave some green. I do this in early spring. I would go for it!

Treekutter, do they back bud well? I almost bought a rosemary shaped as a christmas tree this fall from home depot back home in Ohio. Several had trunks over an inch and half wide and were about 24 inches tall. They were very lush and the smell is wonderful. I was going to Florida and thought they would have them there too, the ones in Fl. shaped the same for christmas, were all dried out and a composition of three or four skinny twig like trunks pruned to mimic a christmas tree, convincingly enough, but nowhere approaching a trunk to work with. I looked in at least ten different home depots and as many lowes and they all were the same junk, beleive it or not most came from the same nursery.

Sorry to hijack the thread, but I am interested in getting one with a decent enough trunk like the ones back home had and if possible cut it down to about seven inches and start from there.

They do back bud, never cut back beyond green.
