Another field grown trident

Spring 2021! I've posted these pictures in the Seasonal Work! thread, but I'll post them here too to keep the progression going. As a reminder, spring work on broadleaf trees for me involves:

1) cutting off interior leaves on extending shoots. This allows light and air into the interior of the tree, keeping weak interior shoots healthy
2) selecting shoots you want to keep for the basic branch structure and pruning off the others
3) pruning back to extending growth to create movement and taper
4) wiring shoots while they’re still green and flexible to establish the branch shape

Here are three pictures - before, during and after.

Wounds from the collection are healing steadily. Lower one is pretty big - it will take a while. In the meantime, I can use the opportunity for trunk and nebari development.

That’s a great move, I have to watch for vine weevils eating all the new roots when I do it though, just a thought. :)

How did the restarted nebari look when you repotted it?
Some areas rooted and some didn’t. The areas that didn’t appeared to have callous tissue that bridged the layers. I removed the callous tissue and will try again.

Nice!…what do we know about these two lurking in the background?😜

The black pine was purchased from Suthin by a Houston friend few years back when Suthin had his big sale. My friend kept it for several years but then his health began declining and he sold this tree to me after he was no longer able to care for his collection. I’ve had it for about 3 or 4 years now. It lost a couple of branches as it recovered. I’ve just let it grow- last summer was the first time I have decandled it as it grew very strong this growing season.

The juniper came from Jim Gremel. It has its own thread. IMG_2173.jpeg
